Alexa will no longer have celebrity voices

For a long time, English-speaking users have had the option of replacing Alexa’s voice (lent to the voice assistant by Nina Rolle) with that of various celebrities. From today this option definitely belongs to the past.

The Amazon catalog allowed the voices of many characters to be purchased at the modest price of $5 per single item, including Shaquille O’Neal, Samuel L. Jackson, Melissa McCarthy e Gordon Ramsey.

The service closes its doors after 3 years, in which the functionality has never been too successful.

What will happen to anyone who buys a celebrity voice on Alexa?

An Amazon spokesperson explained that “customers will be able to continue using these voices for a limited time and can contact customer service for a refund.”

Those who have already purchased the voices will in fact be able to use them until September 30, 2023. The voice of Samuel L. Jackson, on the other hand, will only be available until June 7.

The celebrity voices feature, launched in 2020, is compatible with most Echo devices (except the first generation Echo). However, it will still be possible to choose between different types of accents for Alexa, including American, Australian, British, Canadian and Indian. To change it, just say “Alexa, change voice” or go to your device settings on the Alexa app.

For Italy, obviously, the options are slightly more limited, with the possibility of choosing between a male and female voice. However, a privilege that is not granted to English speakers, our Alexa is able to speak cursive (indeed, cursive my dear).
