Google Maps has long been a absolute reference of digital cartography. To counter the dominance of the Google application, a new project is born today, Overture Maps Foundation which aims to obtain gods reliable cartographic data, easy to consult and especially, open source e interoperabili con various applications. They are part of the project Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, TomTom who will cooperate with The Linux Foundation to create a new alternative to Google Maps.
Linux Foundation announced the birth of the Overture Maps Foundation project with the aim of creating an open source and interoperable map dataset for future applications. The project also involves Amazon Web Services, Meta, Microsoft and TomTom. Jim Zemlin, executive director of the Linux Foundation, describes the project as follows:
“Mapping the physical environment and every community in the world, even as they grow and change, is an extremely complex challenge that no organization can handle. The industry must come together to do this for everyone’s benefit. We are excited to facilitate this open collaboration between leading technology companies to develop high-quality open map data that will enable untold innovations that benefit people, businesses and communities.”
Overture Maps Foundation aims to create a dataset to make it easier for developers to create applications that require map data. The first dataset will debut sometime in 2023 but the project includes a long development plan to achieve high reliability over the next few years.
