Apple devices now support classic Nintendo controllers

Good news for the most nostalgic gamers, especially for those who own Apple devices and love Nintendo classics. TOpple has in fact released a new update that introduces support for Nintendo controllers for NES, SNES, Nintendo 64 and Sega Genesis. These are now usable on Mac, iPhone, iPad and Apple TV.

The news was initially released by the developer Steve Troughton-Smith and immediately confirmed by MacStories.

How to connect Nintendo controllers to Apple devices

To use the controllers you will need to make sure you have your own devices updated to macOS 13, iOS 16 and tvOS 16 (or later). The devices can be connected both via cable and Bluetooth (with modern versions of Nintendo controllers).

Nintendo originally made its classic (modern version) controllers available for its Switch Online service. This includes access to a large catalog of NES, SNES and N64 games.

However, no subscription will be required to use the controllers on Apple devices. The same goes for Steam, which recently introduced support for classic controllers. Recall that in June Apple had already introduced support for controllers Switch Pro e Joy-Con on iPad and iPhone. Last year it had instead added support for PlayStation 5 DualSense and Xbox Series controllers.
