Big Techs support EU guidelines on disinformation

Good news on the front of the European Union’s fight against disinformation, which is finally getting the support of some of the big companies in the tech sector. In fact, the EU has recently published a stricter one Code of Practice on Disinformation, with the commitment of 34 companies and organizations in the sector. Between these Google, Meta, Microsoft, TikTok, Twitch e Twitter.

The European Union recently published some updates to its anti-disinformation guidelines, so that it can refine and expand its code. In this context, Big Tech are committed to contributing to the fight against fake news, starting with removing ads. Then move on to manage the bot, account falsi e deepfake used to spread bogus claims. Additionally, signatories will need to create transparency centers e task force to show how they are implementing the code – supported by improved monitoring – and provide simplified access to the data for researchers. And they will also need to label political announcements more clearly.

For their part, users will have better tools available to identify and report fake news. And the fact check will be extended to all EU countries and languages. All these changes must be put in place by the Big Tech who signed the agreement within six months. And they are called to share their first implementation reports as early as the beginning of 2023. On the other hand, the situation requires somewhat immediate action. The EU first published the code in 2018 and claims it helped fight misinformation about the elections, the pandemic and Ukraine.

In recent years, bots have become a significant problem and misinformation spreads more frequently through live streams in addition to recorded media and posts on social networks. The approach revised by the European Union code, therefore, will not only capture more attempts at circulation of false information, but will do more to discourage this spread in the first place. A useful action, it is undeniable.
