BMW Group relies on low-carbon steel

BMW Group continues its project to reduce the CO2 emissions of its supplier network. The Bavarian company is increasingly focusing on environmental sustainability and puts into practice concrete initiatives aimed at progressively reducing the impact on the environment of the production of new models. A new step in this program concerns the agreement signed by the BMW Group with Salzgitter AG for the supply of alow carbon steel. Here are the details:

BMW Group focuses on sustainability with low-carbon steel

The agreement between the BMW Group and Salzgitter AG represents an important step forward in the Bavarian company’s sustainability program. In fact, starting from 2026, the group’s European production will use the supplies of low-carbon steel made available by the new partner. The new target set by the BMW Group for low carbon steel is very ambitious. The company, in fact, aims aso satisfy more than 40% of the steel demand with this solution a low carbon content as regards the European factories. The goal should be achieved by 2030. Thanks to this agreement it will be possible reduce emissions by 400 thousand tons per year.

Joachim Post, member of the Board of Management of BMW AG and head of the Purchasing and Supplier Network, underlines the importance of the new agreement: “This is an important step in the substantial reduction of CO2 emissions at source in the supplier network. Our goal is to reduce the carbon footprint of the vehicle life cycle through a holistic approach. In particular, we are at the forefront of low carbon steel sourcing and are paving the way for our factories in Europe. “
