There isn’t much room for grittiness in this collection, as you might have guessed from the previous five installments of the Nintendo Switch calendarbut one review favorable to Serious Sam Collection no one takes it at all. If, on the other hand, one’s tastes mostly include a genre, a ranking drawn up by a single person is hardly surprising. And it is with pleasure that yours truly found in the reverence of Croteam towards the great classics the kind of experience capable of surpassing them. Sam pays homage to his muses, one above all Duke Nukem, without ever avoiding surpassing them in the immediate entertainment offered to the player.

The collection includes everything that precedes Serious Sam 2 from a narrative point of view: in chronological order of events we have the third chapter, the first prequel of the saga, and the two halves of the first, The First Encounter and The Second Encounter. What unites every facet of the experience is a greater emphasis on huge hordes to defeat. Before the various Warriors made this concept the bread and butter of their IP, Sam was already exaggerating the toxic virility of Duke Nukem, itself a parody of every existing action movie. The result is a powerhouse of action that puts the player’s enjoyment first and the believability of the whole in the passenger seat.

In other words, however paradoxical it may seem, it is a very “Nintendian” game design philosophy. There are the occasional remnants of the genre, like a management of secret areas that completionists are likely to hate, but overall it’s a fun single-player experience and exhilarating multiplayer. Whether it is co-op in the three delusional campaigns (with ex-DLC attached) or a deathmatch old-fashioned, Serious Sam Collection is a wonderful introduction to the world of first-person shooters. And while it’s not the only exponent of the genre in the standings, it’s certainly the only one to host a Christmas arena!
