Call of Duty: excluding the release of a new game in 2023?

According to rumors, it could be that in 2023 there will be no new game in the Call of Duty franchise

Call of Duty has been a decidedly long-lived franchise for Activision: since 2005 it has been possible to see the annual release of every new game within the series, and by now the players had been get used to expecting every fall some news from the videogame house. Also thanks to the various studios working on the saga, including Infinity Ward, Sledgehammer Games, Treyarch and Raven Software, there has always been the possibility of rolling out a new entry from year to year. However, fans began to notice how this kind of rhythm was damaging quite badly Call of Duty: there were no more interesting news, there was a constant reuse of the engine, of the assets, and the little innovation made in the series had led many to abandon the game, leading them to head towards fresher stocks. Yet, according to a rumor released by Tom Henderson and then by Jason Schreier, this would all be about to change starting in 2023, carrying for the first time in 17 years without a Call of Duty release.

No new Call of Duty games coming out in 2023

In the past few hours, the journalist and insider Jason Schreier wanted to reveal what can be considered a revolution in the approach that Activision will have against Call of Duty and the release of its games. The rumored Call of Duty Modern Warfare II, then confirmed a few weeks ago by the company, is still scheduled for a release in 2022, but as for 2023, apparently the players they will not have to expect new titles. The decision would have been made in the face of disappointing sales of Call of Duty Vanguard, which would therefore not have met the expectations of the company just acquired by Microsoft. Also, some of the reasons behind this failure they would also have been attributed to the presence of other titles of Call of Duty, thus causing a “cannibalization” of the new games placed on the market.

In fact, Call of Duty Warzone continues to be one of the most played free-to-play titles, and also for this reason it appears to have many more active players than its “paid” counterpart, aka Call of Duty Vanguard. In the meantime, other news regarding the franchise would be planned for 2023, including a new free-to-play game created with the collaboration of the Treyarch studio, and a Call of Duty Warzone coming to mobile devices. Anyway, after nearly twenty years of annual releases, this is a significant change of course for development studios, and one that may perhaps give a moment’s respite to a market already saturated with multiplayer shooter titles.
