Cannes 2021: Leos Carax’s Annette will open the festival

Leos Carax opens the Cannes Film Festival with a musical, which is also his first English-language film: Annette

Nine years after the acclaimed Holy Motors, Leos Carax will present his new feature film at Cannes. It was announced that Annette, Carax’s musical and first English-language film, will open on 74th Cannes Film Festival, next Tuesday 6 July.

The protagonists of the film are Adam Driver e Marion Cotillard.

Annette is a musical (embellished with songs by brothers Ron and Russell Mael, members of the alternative rock band Sparks), ed one of the most anticipated titles of the film season.

Set in contemporary Los Angeles, it tells the story of Henry, a stand-up comedian with a fierce sense of humor and Ann, an internationally acclaimed singer. In the spotlight, they are the perfect, healthy, happy and charming couple. The birth of their first daughter, Annette, a mysterious girl with an exceptional fate, will change their lives.

Annette is a real gift for lovers of cinema, music and culture in general; the title we’ve been waiting for after the last, very hard year.

Produced by Charles Gillibert, the director’s sixth feature film is based on an original idea and music by Sparks, and reunites in the cast Marion Cotillard, Adam Driver e Simon Helberg.

The film will have its international premiere at Cannes after the opening ceremony at the Grand Théâtre Lumière in the Palais des festivals in Cannes, to then be released simultaneously in French cinemas. While in North America it will be distributed by Amazon Studios, co-producer with CG Cinema International, Three grams of Films, Canal Plus e Art.

Among the titles that should enter the Cannes 2021 billboard should also be included The French Dispatch by Wes Anderson (expected by many as an opening film) e Three floors by Nanni Moretti.
