Cannes 2023: the poster pays tribute to Catherine Deneuve

The official poster of the Cannes Film Festival 2023 pays tribute to the actress Catherine Deneuve

In yesterday’s presentation, the management of the Cannes 2023 Festival unveiled the poster of the 76th edition, which features the icon of cinema from across the Alps, Catherine Deneuve. The black and white photo portrays the well-known performer during the filming of “The chamade“, a 1968 film directed by Alain Cavalier. Shot on Pampelonne beach, near Saint-Tropez, the film sees Deneuve in the role of Lucile, a character who lives a worldly and superficial life, tinged with ease and a taste for luxury. Her heart beats frantically, quickly, passionately.

The festival defined the actress with the following flattering words:

A true embodiment of cinema, far from what is conventional or appropriate. Without compromise and always in harmony with his convictions, even at the cost of going against the tide.

All while remembering that Deneuve was muse of directors from the caliber of Jacques Demy, Agnès Varda, Luis Buñuel, Francois Truffaut, Marco Ferreri, Manoel de Oliveira, André Téchiné, Emmanuelle Bercot and Arnaud Desplechin. Nel 2008 Catherine Deneuve was listed as one of the possible winners of the Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival for A Christmas Tale. She did not receive the award but she did get a special recognition at the 61st Festival.

The official poster for this edition was made by Hartland Villa from a Jack Garofalo’s photo on the set of the aforementioned film in which the actress starred alongside Michel Piccoli and Roger van Hool.
