Electronic Arts: a patent for 3D modeling of characters appears

Electronic Arts is looking confidently towards its future, with six upcoming games tailored to historical fans. Just to cope with this large amount of work, the company has just filed a new patent that it could make character creation much easier for developers. This new technology should be able to create a 3D model from a photo or video.

It is well known that 3D modeling and character design are two creative processes that take a long time when it comes to video game development. Developers spend months making sure even the most hidden NPCs look neat and in line with the quality of the reference title. With the help of EA’s new patent, this whole process could take much less time.

Electronic Arts, in fact, has filed a relatively simple patent which it describes an algorithm capable of studying photos and videos and, based on what is portrayed, create a three-dimensional model of the immortalized person. The result is a 3D model based on the person seen by the software in the image, ready to be inserted into the game world as an NPC.

The patent also reveals that the technology used should also be able to separate the clothes from the rest of the image, creating costumes for the newborn NPC based on what the subject in the photo is wearing.

Thanks to this technology, the development of a video game would not only become leaner, but it would also make a giant step forward for both artists and modelers: the time required to model the characters would be drastically reduced, even net of some alterations necessary to make the models created in this way compatible with the virtual environments they will live in.
