From DICE to Ubisoft: the new adventure of Fawzi Mesmar

In the past few hours, it was announced that Fawzi Mesmar, former Head of Design at DICE, has recently been hired by Ubisoft as Vice President of Editorial

Battlefield 2042 has just arrived on the market, enjoying a success certainly below the expectations and evaluations that, let’s face it, we would not have expected. After our first lukewarm initial impressions, which were collected in an equally lukewarm preview, our review has done nothing but underline how much the new iteration still depends too much on the past, without big stylistic flashes and particular entertainment. In short, as well as Call of Duty: Vanguard, this new chapter of Battlefield has been received with global calm, even if it is by no means a bad game.

Immediately after the launch of Battlefield 2042, DICE announced that Head of Design Fawzi Mesmar would be leaving the company. This is not because of the bad reception for the chapter, mind you, but apparently the man would have received an offer “that he could not refuse” from another company. And in the past few hours, it turns out that this “other company” is Ubisoft, which he will join with the position of Editorial Vice President, under the guidance of Chief Creative Director Igor Manceau. Mesmar said:

I am truly excited to be able to work with all of Ubisoft’s talented teams to nurture our collective creativity and build the future of Ubisoft games together. Ubisoft has brought together some of the most creative minds in the gaming industry, and I’m looking forward to supporting them in their work to create truly meaningful entertainment experiences for gamers.

Fawzi Mesmar switches from DICE to Ubisoft in a rather delicate moment for the company

Igor Mancea u, for his part, said instead

Fawzi is one of the most respected Game Designers in the industry, with a great ability to know how to bring teams together through projects, experience and background. We are really happy to welcome him to our Editorial team and I’m pretty sure he will build strong alliances with all of Ubisoft’s studios. His load of experience will help us to continue to be united around a common vision, strengthening and growing our video game catalog and giving players valuable and memorable experiences.

Ubisoft’s editorial team has been subject to a lot of controversy lately, with outgoing Vice President Maxime Beland having to step down due to some harassment allegations. That Ubisoft is, like many other large companies, the bearer of a toxic environment is very obvious, we only hope that the changes at the top, as in the case of the arrival of Fawzi Mesmar, can bring it back on track.
