Google and YouTube against fake news: 13 million invested for fact checking

The fight against fake news is a fight that Google fights on the front line, as demonstrated by a recent investment by the company in fact checking, the process that aims to verify sources and highlight any false information.

Ansa reports that Google and YouTube have invested $13.2 million in support of theInternational Fact-Checking Network (IFCN), a community of fact-checkers born in 2015 and committed to the fight against disinformation. IFCN is also a promoter of the Global Fact Check Funda fund to which Google will contribute in 2023, in support of 135 organizations fighting fake news in 65 countries around the world, in more than 80 different languages.

How Google will support fact checking

It’s certainly not Google’s first major investment in this regard. Since 2018 the company has invested approx 75 million dollars for similar projects, to strengthen digital literacy and fight against online disinformation.

The new fund now aims to notify the user of any unverified articles and content. A feature that should also arrive on YouTube, where a special fact checking box will appear if the videos are unclear. The verification system will use a tool called Fact Checker Explorerwhich will draw on a database of around 150,000 sources, all verified and reliable.
