High speed internet in space. To announce it is the European Commission with the aim of keeping Europe always connected to the network. A project that it should cost 6 billion euros, of which 2.4 from the common budget.
The European Union says enough.
Enough for areas without connectivity, enough for service interruptions, enough for the hegemony of the United States, Russia and China, which already have entire constellations of satellites.
And so today comes the announcement of the high speed internet network in space. In short, based on satellites that will be totally European.
The aim, as we have anticipated, is certainly to keep European citizens online, becoming independent and in the meantime increasing the security of critical sectors.
There will obviously also be positive spillovers for the European space industry, with a gross added value of EUR 17-24 billion and the creation of new jobs.
“Our new connectivity infrastructure will provide high-speed internet access, support our existing internet network, increase our resilience and cybersecurity, and provide connectivity to all of Europe and Africa – explains the European Commissioner for the Internal Market, Thierry Breton. – The project will be ‘pan-European’ and will allow the numerous European start-ups to be at the forefront of technological innovation, in a sector that plays a growing role in our daily life, in our economic growth, in our security and in our geopolitical weight “
The infrastructure will be based on the latest quantum communication technologies for secure cryptography, with the first services delivered by 2025.
