How to return a Steam game and get the money back

Today any PC player (and of course Steam Deck) knows all too well the benefits of Steam, the Valve platform that has been dominating the compatible gaming sector for years. Although it is true that other services such as the Epic Games Store or GOG have grown a lot.

In Steam you can download many free games, trial versions and demos, and of course access to delicious offers. Winter offers are active until January 5for example.

However, maybe at some point you have bought a game that has disappointed you, or that was not what you thought (It can happen, because many times we talk about very cheap prices, and we fall into temptation).

It is also possible that the game does not work correctly, or that the DLCs or contents described are not included. Fortunately, Steam has a great returns service.and we explain how it works.

Guide to return a game (and get the money back) on Steam

Surely you have ever thought about return a game purchased on Steam. And it is also possible that you changed your mind, thinking that you could not do it because we are talking about a digital video game.

Big mistake, because in current times returns are also made on Steam. And it is also one of the returns services that works best, although it also has its basic conditions.

To begin with, when returning a game or add-on that you have purchased on Steam, you should know that The return can only be made under two conditions.

The first is that said return is requested within a maximum period of 14 days. In other words, if you bought a game 15 days or more ago, you will not be able to return it except in exceptional cases (malfunction or manifest error of Steam).

On the other hand, it is only possible to return a game if you have not exceeded 2 hours of game session. If you have played more than two hours, Steam will not allow refunds… except in extreme cases.

If you have bought a game on Steam and meet both conditions (you have not exceeded the 14 day period and you have not played more than 2 hours), then you can return it and get your money back.

To return a Steam game you must follow these steps:

  • Log in with your Steam account, and then click on the tab Supportlocated at the top.
  • The most recent games you’ve played will be displayed, as well as a dropdown with various help options.
  • Click on the tab Shoppingand those games that you can return (that is, that meet the two conditions described above) will be displayed.
  • Tap on the game you want to return, and several options will appear below.
  • Select the option I want to request a return.
  • you will be asked the reason for the return: technical problem, purchase by accident, or simply for a personal issue (the game is not as expected, for example).
  • Next you will have to fill out a return request form, explaining the reason why we want to return said game or add-on. It is advisable to be as descriptive as possible.
  • Click on Send requesty you will receive a confirmation email.

From this point on, the Steam Support team will analyze the resource and, if they agree with the request you submitted, you will receive the money invested in the same payment method used for the purchase.

That easy. The Steam returns system is very practical and is a great help if we have made a mistake when buying a game. Of course, we ask you not to abuse it, especially if it is not a technical problem, malfunction or error.
