Starting next March 22nd Google Chat will become Google’s default messaging application, thus going to permanently replace Hangouts. This means that users will be redirected to Chat when they try to use Hangouts from a browser or mobile application. In this way, the technological giant marks the last step in the revolution of its messaging service, which began not a few years ago.
Google’s messaging proposition always seems to have been quite confusing. Speaking of which, Google Chat is not to be confused with GChat, the unofficial name of Google Talk, which was officially dropped in 2017 and replaced with – guess what! – Hangouts. But beyond all this, what really matters is that dal 22 March Chat will permanently replace the old messaging service, despite the domain hangouts.google.com will continue to work.
If you usually use Hangouts, you will certainly be interested to know that your conversation histories will all be transferred to Chat, except in “some special cases”. So Google reports. Incidentally, for now this change only affects Workspace users, as well as legacy G Suite Basic and Business customers. This means that it mainly impacts people who work within companies or organizations, rather than the average user. Apparently, however, 9to5Google has already noticed that even free Google accounts will have to accept the same transition from Hangouts to Google Chat.
