Microsoft warns that there will be a latest update for Windows 8.1. The final update will take place on January 10th

Microsoft (here for more information on the company) has issued a public notice related to Windows 8.1. As the operating system is nearing end of support and therefore will no longer receive further security updates. In a recently published notice, Microsoft tells users to already start considering switching to a newer version of Windows. In case this is not possible due to hardware limitations, it recommends purchasing a new device capable of performing Windows 11 (the best option).

Below are the first statements about the final Windows 11 update.

We remind you that Windows 8.1 will reach end of support on January 10, 2023. At that point, technical assistance and software updates will no longer be provided. If you have devices running Windows 8.1, we recommend that you upgrade them to a more up-to-date, in-service, and supported version of Windows. If your devices do not meet the technical requirements to run a newer version of Windows, we recommend that you replace the device with one that supports Windows 11,

Microsoft typically releases security updates beyond the end of support as part of the so-called program Extended Security Update. However, as far as Windows 8.1 is concerned, the company would not release such a program. In other words, once Windows 8.1 reaches end of support, it’s pretty much gone forever, so businesses would have no option but to upgrade to a newer version.

Microsoft will not offer an Extended Security Update (ESU) program for Windows 8.1. Continuing to use Windows 8.1 after January 10, 2023 can increase an organization’s exposure to security risks or affect its ability to meet compliance obligations.

It goes without saying that once Windows 8.1 reaches end of support and new security updates are no longer shipped, the operating system will continue to function normally on all devices it is installed on. However, the lack of security updates produces increased security risks, as the detected vulnerabilities would remain unresolved.
