The event of the Mondiali 2022 in League of Legends will see qualifiers in Mexico City; the groups and quarter-finals in New York; the semifinals in Toronto, Canada; and the finals in San Francisco, California. This will be the first time Riot Games will organize World Cups in various North American countries. Not only that: the tournament will be the first stop of the event in Mexico and Canada.

The announcement took place at the Chase Center during the press conference before the NBA game between the Golden State Warriors and the Toronto Raptors. Moreover, the basketball competition saw the teams of the city of the semifinals (Toronto) and the finals (San Francisco) take the field. Additionally, attendees illustrated Riot’s plan to carpet North America at the event.

The 2022 World Cup will also be hosted in the Liga Latinoamerica competition arena of LoL Esports (LLA) for the qualification phase, before the group and quarter-finals are held at the Hulu Theater in Madison Square Garden.

“The momentum of League of Legends esports has continued to increase since we last hosted the World Cup in the US in 2016. We are thrilled to be able to bring the full force of our global esports once again to North America and, COVID allowing, to welcome the fans in the stands of three different countries and four different cities ”, he declares Naz Aletaha, Global Head of Esports at LoL. “The World Cup is the most important event in our sport and we can’t wait to celebrate it with our fans from North America and around the world.”

How does the LoL World Championship work?

The League of Legends World Cup make up the pinnacle of League esports competition. During the tournament the best teams from 12 different regions compete for the title of champion. The event is held at the end of the regular season in a different region each year. The tournament sees 24 teams from Riot’s 12 professional leagues participate in a month-long tournament. The purpose? To crown the best team in the world. The 2020 World Championship has broken all previous spectator records. In fact this had a peak of over 45.95 million simultaneous viewers worldwide. The average figure is even more incredible: over 23.04 million viewers per minute.

In November 2021, the DWG KIA of the Riot Games League of South Korea (LCK), defending champions and big favorites of the tournament, and the EDward Gaming, the first-placed team of the Chinese League of Riot Games (LPL). The EDGs lifted the Summoners Cup and took the Mercedes-Benz championship rings after an exciting series of best-of-five matches. The 2021 World Cup has set new spectator records for esports, surpassing the 2020 event numbers, and the official numbers will be released in December.

Riot Games has confirmed that more information on the 2022 World Cup will be announced in the future.
