macOS Ventura supports Rosetta: new for ARM Linux

New Features

A new feature brings support for Rosetta in ARM Linux virtual machines that use Apple silicon. Apple announced it (along with a number of other updates for Mac with macOS Ventura) at WWDC this week. The new macOS Ventura will allow users to run Linux binaries x86_64 su ARM Linux using the same Rosetta translation software that allows users to perform app Intel su silicio Apple.

The company stated that:

In macOS 13 and later, on Mac computers with Apple silicon chip, the virtualization framework supports Rosetta on ARM Linux virtual machines (VMs). Rosetta is a translation process that allows users to run apps that contain x86_64 instructions on Apple silicon. In macOS, this allows apps built for Intel-based Mac computers to run smoothly on Apple silicon. Rosetta allows the same functionality for Intel Linux apps in ARM Linux virtual machines.

In detail

Apple also notes that Rosetta does not support the bootstrap or installing Intel Linux distributions on Apple silicon Mac computers using the virtualization framework. But Intel Linux distributions can be run using the virtualization framework on Intel Macs without the need for translation.
