Russia decided to restrict access to Instagram after its parent company, Meta, said it would not censor hate messages about the Russian invasion and Vladimir Putin on the social media platform.
Meta has recently changed its policy and stated that would not have censored hate speech messages against Russians in some countries. Similarly, Russian prosecutors have asked to block access to Instagram.
Russia’s Attorney General’s Office said it wanted to acknowledge Meta as an “extremist organization and to ban its activities on the territory of Russia”. He further claimed that the platform had been used for incite “Mass unrest accompanied by violence”. Some Russian regional governors also have deleted their Instagram accounts.
Meta it is also the parent company of Facebookto which the Russian government blocked access last weeke WhatsApp, one of the most popular messaging applications in Russia. At the moment we don’t know that the messaging app will also be blocked.
The social media giant said that it will further restrict access for most Russians to external information about the war. Similarly, the influence of gods will increase state media.
Meta’s decision to allow offensive speeches against the Russians is part of an extraordinary one wave of corporate activism over the Russian invasion of Ukrainewith hundreds of brands that come out of the Russian market. The invasion led to thousands of dead and created a refugee crisis in Europe. At the moment there are more than 2 million people on the run from Ukraine after only two weeks of war.
