Netflix will continue to expand its game catalog

Netflix said today it will take a “more strategic” approach to offering new games on its platform, by inking new deals with developers. The announcement comes during a meeting with the press (via Gamesindustry.biz) in which the streaming giant announced a series of new titles arriving in the gaming catalog.

Among the new announcements we find:

  • An exclusive game from developer Vainglory Super Evil Megacorp based on an intellectual property (IP) of Netflix. No further details have been announced
  • Two games in the series Valley monumenty: titles developed by Ustwo Games that will arrive in the catalog by 2024
  • A new game in the franchise Too Hot To Handle of Nanobits. The announcement is expected by the end of the year
  • Mighty Quest: Rogue Palace, the spin-off of Ubisoft’s Mighty Quest For Epic Loot will arrive on April 18th. This is the second of three Ubisoft games in the works for Netflix

Netflix announces 40 new games for 2023

More generally, Netflix has announced that they will arrive well in 2023 40 new titles. These add to the 55 launched since November 2021. Gamesindustry reports that, in total, Netflix would 86 games in the works: 16 of these are managed by in-house studios, while the other 70 are developed by third-party partners.

This is an important effort given that from an August 2022 report we know that only 1% of Netflix subscribers had downloaded at least one of the games in the catalog. A disastrous percentage, to which, however, the company had responded with cautious optimism.

“We are still early in our gaming journey and the number of members who know and play our games continues to grow,” the giant said.

An optimism that seems to prove Netflix right, which after the initial skepticism regarding the launch of a subscription plan with advertising is now reaping the first fruits.
