New funds for studios in Lamezia: Calabria supports cinema

New funds are on the way, allocated directly by the Calabria Region, to open new film production studios in Lamezia

In a period of crisis like the one that cinema has been going through for a whole year, support is always welcome and this is what the company intends to do. Calabria, which intends to allocate new funds aimed at the academic yearopening of studios for film production and audiovisual seriality. These will be created at Lamezia and the will is to create a kind of Citadel of Cinema.

This investment is a clear signal of Calabria’s willingness to focus on an area that has been strongly attacked by the restrictions intended to prevent infections resulting from Covid-19. In a moment of health emergency it is visible how Calabria wants to support the cinema sector, which is in extreme difficulty and does not know how to recover from this uncertain and difficult to manage situation. AFIC – Association of Italian Film Festivals has in fact already moved a year ago requesting interventions to support the sector but there has not been a state response that has allowed the recovery of this area, now close to collapse.

The regional decision

The decision was made by the regional council and it was the president Nino Spirli who confirmed it, explaining the reason for this maneuver:

This is an important step for the creation of Calabrian studios and, more generally, for the future of the entire region, in the wake of Jole Santelli, who strongly supported this great dream. A dream in which we continue to believe, aware of the great potential of the cinema industry ». The studios will be built on a regional property, near the airport’s motorway junction. In this way, we hope to make our land one of the national and international points of reference, in a strategic sector.

The signal to show the potential of a land too often considered weak and unable to generate profitable investments is now there and future results will show whether a right or risky decision has been made regarding this new goal.
