As announced in an official press release, Nintendo acquired Dynamo today Pictureswhich will now be renamed Nintendo Pictures. According to the company, the new subsidiary “will focus on the development of visual content using the Nintendo trademarks” and on the “planning and production of visual content, including animation in computer graphics”. According to IMDB, Dynamo has worked on dozens of titles including Death Stranding and Persona 5, as well as post-production work on Metroid: Other M.
The acquisition comes at a very important time for the Japanese company, as Nintendo is preparing for the most significant theatrical release of recent years: an animated film based on the Super Mario Bros franchise with Chris Pratt. The release of the film is currently scheduled for spring next year, almost thirty years after the live action Super Mario Bros. dated 1993 (with Bob Hoskins e John Leguizamo).
Nintendo is certainly not the first company to offer popular videogame universes in a cinematic key. We know that HBO is currently working on a TV series based on The Last of Us, while SEGA has released two Sonic-inspired films. Sony has also been busy, making a feature film based on Uncharted.
