The YouTuber known as The Completionist bought all the games for Nintendo Wii U and 3DS before the closure of the e-shop, which will take place permanently on March 27th. The Completionist has spent a total of approximately $23,000 and will donate the entire collection to the Video Game History Foundation.
In particular Girard Khalilthis is the real name of The Completionist, has spent 9.673$ to secure 866 titles for Nintendo Wii U, and more 13.118$ for 1,547 3DS games. The whole collection needs 1.2TB and 267GB respectively. Khalil explained that it took him 328 days to be able to buy everything and that the operation was also possible thanks to some lenders, who made 464 eShop cards available to him.
“When a digital storefront closes or games are removed from the market, many titles are in danger of being lost forever,” Khalil explained in his video. “How to save all those Wii U and 3DS games from loss? The first step was to determine the cost and storage space required. We spent three days calculating the total, and once we had all this information, we were able to move forward with our noble cause of conservation.”
Khalil said he will donate the collection of Nintendo classics to the Video Game History Foundation. The latter is a non-profit organization that preserves the history of video games.
Meanwhile, Nintendo is preparing to permanently close the eShops dedicated to 3DS and Wii U. The closure will take place on March 27th.
