Online gambling, confirmed the fine in Meta for 750 thousand euros

The appeal of Meta to avoid the penalty of Agcom to have advertised gambling on Facebook it was rexpelled from the Tar of Lazio. The fine of 750 thousand euros is therefore confirmed.

The Lazio Regional Administrative Court rejected the appeal of Meta Platform Ireland, which had contested Resolution 422/22/Cons. with which Agcom had imposed a fine of 750 thousand euros on Meta. The accusation is that he allowed certain business users to promote gambling on the social network, violating the “Dignity decree”. Meta also had an obligation to block the dissemination and uploading of other similar content, following the notice & stay down criterion.

Commissioner Agcom, Massimiliano Capitanioexplains: “The sentence of the TAR confirms once again the importance of the regulatory role played by Agcom to impose also on the giants of the web the respect of the laws and a greater control of the contents that circulate on the net. Lightness is not admissible against the scourge of gambling”.

The Tar order therefore proved Agcom right. In fact denying when he had stated by the company: “Agcom actually claims that Meta Platforms Ireland actively monitors sponsored content and therefore requires it to adapt its business model a new liability regime.

Instead, the measure represents on the contrary a specific order “limited only to business users who have published the posts subject of the proceeding in question” for which Meta “today it already carries out a specific preventive control activity”. Like other ads, Meta has to stop gambling ads from running.
