After having invaded the Spotify catalog, partially revolutionizing the platform, audio podcasts are also about to arrive on YouTube Music. It is to announce it Kai Chuk, head of YouTube’s podcast division, who revealed the news during an interview with Hot Pod Summit. News later confirmed by a company spokesman (via Engdadget) who stated:
“We will soon begin bringing both audio and video podcasts to YouTube Music for users in the US, making podcasts more discoverable and accessible, with more regions on the way. This will help make the podcasts people already love on YouTube available wherever they want to listen.”
Later this year YouTube Studio will introduce some tools for creating podcasts. Creators will then be able to add audio podcasts directly to YouTube, using RSS feeds. This will automatically add the content to the YouTube Music catalog.
Engadget reports that you will be able to play podcasts in the background for free, but ad-free listening will be reserved for paid users only. It will also be possible to switch between the video and audio versions of the podcast (and vice versa).
Unlike its main competitors (think Spotify and Amazon) YouTube doesn’t seem to be particularly interested in creating original podcastsat least for now.
