After the pyrotechnic finale of the third installment of the series, which brilliantly marked the closure of a trilogy that began way back in 2009, now Nintendo and Platinum Games have decided to consistently deepen the lore of the saga. The new chapter, whose announcement came, completely by surprise, during the TGA 2022 ceremony, (as the name itself also says) will in fact be a prequel that mainly aims to tell the origins of the iconic witch and some of her supporting characters, and it does so by quite significantly departing from the gameplay of the classic chapters of the saga.

As it was easy to guess even before trying the preview game by hand, Bayonetta Origins: Cereza And The Lost Demon is a chapter that is profoundly different from the other titles in the series. In fact, in it we will not find the very fast fights that characterized the brand, but, on the contrary, the atmosphere will be decidedly more relaxed. This does not mean that there will be no action, but given that our protagonist, here little more than a sweet (but already rather resolute) child, will not yet be able to count on the immense powers we saw in the original trilogy, the clashes will take place in quite a different form.

The young witch will in fact be accompanied by Cheshire, a demon with the appearance of a monstrous cat, who also appeared in the third chapter. However, we must not make the mistake of considering the latter as a simple supporting actor, as he will soon assume the role of real co-protagonist of the adventure. In fact, the two characters will be endowed with very different (and in some ways almost complementary) powers and characteristics, therefore they will have to actively collaborate both in battle and in the numerous puzzles scattered throughout the game world.

From our tried preview of Bayonetta Origins: Cereza And The Lost Demon we were able to see how the title essentially lives on two souls. On the one hand we have the exploration of the labyrinthine forest of Avalon (the main setting of the game), with its numerous environmental puzzles that would be impossible to overcome without the active collaboration of the two protagonists. On the other hand, however, we have the actual clashes with the evil beings that swarm the forest. Here too it will be useful to exploit the powers of both characters, although, at least initially in these cases, it seemed to us that Cheshire’s offensive potential tends to steal the show a little more.

In order to be able to give a definitive judgment on all aspects of the work it will obviously be necessary to wait to have the complete experience in our hands, however if we already had to express a preliminary opinion right now, we could say that we preferred exploration a little more to fights. This is not a criticism of the latter, which are still fun and well studied, however the puzzle solving offered by the experience has managed more than anything else to pleasantly stimulate our meninges, especially when we find ourselves solving the various scattered shrines for the game world, which will undoubtedly require a good deal of collaboration from the two protagonists.

As for the gameplay, in our preview test of Bayonetta Origins: Cereza And The Lost Demon we were able to see an atypical but decidedly interesting choice. As we have said, the two protagonists of the game will have very distinct abilities that will be used in combination to overcome the various situations we will encounter. From this point of view, we particularly appreciated the idea of ​​deputing the left joy-con entirely to the control of the little witch of Umbra, while in a similar way, the right one will allow us to control Cheshire, when it is summoned on the field.

Especially at the beginning and in some fights, controlling both characters separately could be a little unsettling, but once you get the hang of the system concocted by the developers, everything will be more fluid, clear and definitely fun. Also thanks to a difficulty that generally seemed very permissive to us, making, among other things, the experience very accessible even to less practical players of the genre.

We approached Bayonetta Origins: Cereza And The Lost Demon with high expectations also on the artistic front, and after this preview test we can only be satisfied. The art direction of the game is absolutely exquisite and the animations are very expertly done.

Some glimpses of the forest of Avalon seem to come straight from an illustrated book and the color palette used gives a fairy-tale effect capable of truly enchanting. All supported by a sound composed of delicate, truly spot-on music, as well as an enveloping sound design that allows an unexpected and very welcome immersion.

At the end of our test of this forthcoming title we were pleasantly surprised by the new adventure of our beloved witch of Umbra. The system created by the software house is a bit atypical but we thought it was really interesting and fun, as well as accessible to anyone, thanks to a difficulty that is not at all punitive. We can’t wait to get our hands on the full title on March 17th, to be able to find out all the details.
