Samsung chooses Texas for chip production

Samsung officially announced a new advanced plant for the chip manufacturing in Texas, which is estimated to cost around $ 17 billion. And it could create well 1,800 new jobs. More specifically, it appears that the new plant will be located in the city of Taylor, about 30 miles away from Austin, where the company already has its own reference facility. Indeed, the new factory should even be larger than the Austin plant, occupying an area of approximately 500 hectares. But let’s take a closer look at this new Samsung chip manufacturing center.

Samsung: The chips will be produced in the new plant in Texas

“With increased production capacity, we will be able to better meet the needs of our customers and contribute to the stability of the global semiconductor supply chain.” Like this Kinam Kim |, vice president and CEO of Samsung Electronics Device Solutions Division, commented on the construction of the new chip manufacturing plant. “In addition to our partners in Texas, we are grateful to the Biden administration for creating an environment that supports companies like Samsung as we work to expand state-of-the-art semiconductor manufacturing in the United States. We also thank the administration and Congress for their bipartisan support to rapidly implement federal incentives for national chip manufacturing and innovation. “

More in detail, the company seems willing to officially open the office next year, so da to begin chip production in 2024. The goal, in fact, is to quickly start the production of processors, both for Samsung products and for those of other companies. Indeed, according to a recent report, the Taylor plant may be specialized in production of advanced chips up to 3 nm. A decision that doesn’t surprise us, considering that the company has already produced chips for Qualcomm and Nvidia. After all, however, it is not even surprising that the new Samsung chip manufacturing plant comes at a time when the shortage of processors is being felt loud and clear.

Apparently, the situation may not improve until at least 2023. In response, the Biden administration is trying to strengthen chip manufacturing in the United States. By doing so, it hopes to reduce the potential for disruption of the supply chain, and reverse the declining share of the country’s production in recent decades. Not surprisingly, the Senate recently approved subsidies of $ 52 billion for new chip manufacturing plants. The US industry is planning serious increases in its production capacity, although not all new plants will be available anytime soon. We will have to wait a few years, but perhaps this could be the definitive (or almost) solution to the chip shortage.
