Samsung will increase the use of Exynos chips to reduce dependence on third party suppliers

Samsung Electronics, the world’s leading smartphone maker, is also on the list of companies that produce i propri chip. Unlike Apple though, Samsung also uses company chips like Qualcomm and MediaTek, along with their own SoC Exynos. The South Korean company recently said they wanted to increase the use of your chip so that you are no longer dependent on third party suppliers.

Samsung says: “More Exynos chips, less dependence on others”

Until now, most of Samsung phones have used third party chip and not your own brand. However it seems the company has plans to change the cards on the table. Indeed the South Korean tech giant is planning to reduce his dependence on the chipmaker US Qualcomm.

Currently, only about 20% of the total of Samsung smartphones is powered by its own Exynos chips. Qualcomm dominates in the mid-range and premium smartphones, while many of the new entry-level phones now have chip MediaTek.

As of 2022, according to the Electronic Times report (via ITHome), the number of smartphones Samsung Galaxy powered by their own Exynos chips it will increase two or three times. Besides the division System LSI will double the production capacity for the Exynos line of chips.

One of the reasons attributed to this move is the global chip shortage. The company had to postpone the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S21 FE smartphone several times due to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 chip shortage and the smartphone is now scheduled to go public in January 2022. It was a blow to the sales and the program launch of the South Korean company.

Samsung is expected to launch its own soon SoC Exynos 2200 e i GPU benchmark results of this next chip have leaked online. The results show that the GPU a 6 core RDNA 2 by AMD on the Exynos 2200 boasts a peak performance improvement from +31 to 34% compared to the Exynos 2100.

It is argued that the Samsung Exynos 2200 will use the new architecture ARMv9, launched just this year. The latter focuses a lot on AI, automatic learning e safety, which means the chipset will benefit from it. However it remains to be seen how well the Exynos 2200 will perform towards Apple A15 e Snapdragon 8 Gen1 (aka Snapdragon 898), its true rivals.
