The US Treasury Department announced an exemption from sanctions against Russia for all companies offering Internet services. This exemption covers all business activities that offer services, software, hardware and technology connected to the Internet. Messaging systems, domain registrations, e-mails and photo and video sharing services are also not subject to sanctions against Russia.
The aim of the measure is guarantee independent and free communication. Internet communication technologies are considered a key to the protection of human rights. In this way, companies have the opportunity to continue operating in Russia, despite the sanctions. Thanks to these services it will be possible to maintain access to as independent communication via the Internet as possible.
I am already several American telecommunications companies that have decided to leave Russia voluntarily. Note that, on the other hand, other companies have registered a block of services. This is the case of Facebook which has to deal with the restrictions applied by the Russian government. At the moment, a solution seems to be still a long way off. It will be necessary to wait for the end of the conflict to try to restore the situation. In the meantime, however, American Internet service providers will be able to continue their business in the US, in order to support human rights and free and independent communication.
