It seems that Sony Interactive Entertainment has registered a new model of PlayStation 5 in Japan. Let’s find out all the details together.
In April, the company received the certification of a project which appears to be a new model of the “CFI-1200” seriescomplete with updated radio equipment. The product got the design certification by the Japanese Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, which guarantees the compliance of radio and wireless communication equipment to certain technical standards.
The PlayStation 5 launch hardware uses one CFI-1XXX model numbering scheme. The updated hardware released in 2021, on the other hand, uses one schema CFI-11XX. In addition, last May, it was reported that Sony would launch the production of a new version of the PS5 in 2022. According to what was revealed, the new version would have had a “new semi-custom CPU” a 6 nm of AMD.
The Taiwanese website DigiTimes said suppliers, including the TSMC semiconductor foundrythey were planning to start producing the new model the console between the second and third quarter of this year.
Last year Hiroki TotokiSony’s chief financial officer said the company was considering various solutions to cope with the global shortage of hardware components. Among them he had emphasized the possibility of modify projects or to contact secondary suppliers.
The topic was brought up again this week during a question and answer session on Sony’s financial results. During the event, Totoki was asked what measures is Sony taking per fight the shortage of semiconductors which, according to Intel, could last until 2024.
While Totoki’s response didn’t refer specifically to PS5, the CFO said:
In several areas we have changed our source of supply and also our design, among other things. We were able to cope with the situation. So, as far as the procurement of components is concerned, I think the outlook is good.
Sony announced on Tuesday that it had sold 11.5 million consoles of the new generation during the financial year FY21 which ended in March 2022missing the initial goal of 14.8 million consoles precisely because of the shortage of components.
