Sony showed a VR viewer with microdisplay OLED 4K: a device designed for virtual reality and the metaverse, not just for gaming. In fact the team that worked on it at the Sony R&D Center it is not under the Sony Interactive Entertainment division, which develops products for PlayStation. So it is not the heir of PSVR but a viewer designed for the future of VR interaction.
Over the years Sony has developed first-rate technologies for imaging and screens: this prototype proves it. In fact the microdisplay can reach a 4K resolution while being smaller than the screens of many other rival headsets.
Also, the engineers Yasuka Ishihara e Kei Kimura explain that this device has a very low latency, with response times that promise to be as low as 0.01 seconds. Sony, however, seems to be only in development, suggesting that this device may not arrive in time for the launch of PS5 VR in 2022.
The fact that the development is outside the PlayStation division suggests that the product is not developed solely for gamers. Indeed, it could become a device that finds its own true application in the metaverse, towards which more and more companies are moving. This also raises the suspicion that the VR viewer will not have the most affordable prices of products intended for the world of gaming.
Next year Sony is expected to present PS5 in versene VR, but we shouldn’t find 4K displays for every eye on the new version of the console. But this does not mean that the two development departments do not communicate: Sony could exploit experience accumulated in gaming also in the viewers for the metaverse, and vice versa.
