Square Enix recommends changing Final Fantasy XIV passwords

In a Lodestone blog post, Square Enix has reported that there has been an attempted cyber attack on Final Fantasy XIV’s account management system. The company explained that i cybercriminals may have come into possession of email addresses and passwords.

Square Enix has therefore suggested players to change their passwords, avoiding to choose vulnerable combinations (such as the date of birth). The post reads:

“If you are using the same email address and password combination on your Square Enix account, as with any other service, or you are using a password that can be easily guessed, we strongly recommend that you change it immediately.”

In order to mitigate the effect of the attack, Square Enix is ​​currently restricting access to accounts that are believed to have been compromised. Interested players will receive an email from the publisher with an invitation to change their game password.

“If we continue to experience an increasing number of unauthorized access attempts, a password reset could be initiated for all Square Enix accounts,” the post concludes. “We would like to remind all users to pay attention to the security of their account in order to protect information and personal data”.

Meanwhile, in another piece of news dating back to this summer, Square Enix released the latest trailer for Dragon Quest X Offline, a new version of the MMORPG which can fully playable in offline mode. The game is currently only available for the Japanese market, and it is unclear if there will be a release for the European territories as well.
