The foldable iPhone is shown in an Italian concept

L’iPhone pieghevole will arrive in the next two years, according to most analysts, and the Italian designer Anthony Rose wanted to image a concept of “iPhone Air“. Which may never come true in detail, but which shows us what effect it might have on seeing an Apple on the back of one smartphone folding.

Foldable iPhone: here is the Italian concept of “iPhone Air”

Several analysts, including the trustworthy Ming-Chi Kuo confirmed that Apple is working on a foldable iPhone. So much so that Apple has also patented a technology for a hinge that ensures the phone can fold without any problem. But Apple doesn’t experiment with iPhones until it’s absolutely ready: in all likelihood, No.We will not see the leaflet of the Apple until 2024after Samsung and the other Android manufacturers have cemented the idea of foldables in the imagination of the smartphone world.

But that doesn’t mean it can’t be imagined. She did it Antonio De Rosa, the owner of ADR Studio, with offices in Italy, Singapore and Thailand. The designer and his team tried to imagine a smartphone that follows the stylistic dictates that the Apple is already adopting, applying them to a foldable product. The result is called iPhone Air.

Foldable, but still iPhone: a concept that embodies the style of the Apple

Judging from the images, it seems that De Rosa’s team started from forma ‘clamshell’ of the Motorola Razr and brought to life last year by Samsung with the Galaxy Z Flip3. One way to take advantage of folding screens is not to have a tablet that folds into the size of a smartphone. But rather to have a device just over 6 inches diagonally, which folds for fit comfortably into any pocket. Protecting the main screen as well, while doing so.

The inspiration of Samsung’s Flip3 can also be seen in the external screen, small and positioned next to the cameras. But they are arranged like the ones we recently saw on iPhones. Nello screen external we see the time with different widgets, including the classic one of the Apple unlock screen. But it seems likely that if Apple ever decides to adopt this design, it would use this secondary display to show notifications and perhaps even widgets. And in all likelihood he would use it too Viewfinder for taking selfies keeping the screen closed.

However, it should be noted that the unmistakable style of the iPhone is also in the details of this design. The flat edgesthe metallic finishes and the care to emphasize the thin thickness of the smartphone they are in line with what Cupertino has been doing in recent years.

Some details of the future of the Apple

But in addition to riding on the design decisions made by Apple in recent years, this foldable iPhone concept also shows novelties that we should see in the next iPhones. Starting from the decision of show a ‘pill’ punch-hole instead of the notch, which should be this year’s big design novelty.

Also, in the concept we do not see no Lightning input and not even a USB-C. An iPhone that therefore focuses on the ricarica wireless with MagSafe. This solution is not far-fetched: Cupertino is working on an iPhone without ports, which can avoid restrictions even in Europe where it seems that the obligation to adopt one may come. common charging standard (in all likelihood, USB-C). Although this solution would not solve the problem of quickly passing ultra-high definition video files recorded with iPhone cameras.

The images and the video made by ADR Studio also show that the Apple seems to have solved the problem of crease in the screenthat becomes invisible once opened. Something simple from a theoretical point of view. But we suspect this is the main problem that is delaying the release of the iPhone Air (or whatever the product will be called) on the market – it’s not easy, at all.

This concept probably doesn’t represent what we will see in 2023-2024, when Apple announces its product. Assuming it does: analysts are sure Apple is working on it, but it could still scrap the project before it goes into production.

Although not necessarily correct, the work of the ADR Studio team has the merit of showing us what the future of the iPhone could be. The style of Cupertino seems clear in the concept and we are confident that Californian designs are working to find a solution that, although innovative, keep the iPhone DNA. And this seems like an excellent starting point.
