We grew up with it. We loved it. We dreamed about it and heard it ringing in our ears even when we weren’t playing. From today the iconic musical theme of Super Mario Bros becomes part of the history of music, being included in the National Recording Registry. It is the first time that a video game has been recognized with its inclusion in the list of the most important phonograph recordings.
Mario is indeed in excellent company, as the list includes the likes of Velvet Underground, Led Zeppelin, Beach Boys, De La Soul, Eurythmics and many others.
For those who don’t know what we’re talking about, the National Recording Registry is a real register that aims to preserve the memory of musical recordings deemed of value for global cultural heritage.
Specifically, to be included in the list is the Ground Theme, present in the iconic first game of the saga, released in 1985. It is, in practice, the main theme that we all know.
“Having this music alongside so many other classics is a great honor,” he said Konji Kondothe father and composer of the Super Mario Bros. theme music Kondo also explained that, at the time, the audio track had to be extremely compressed, since Nintendo cartridges could not take up too much space.
In addition to the Super Mario Bros theme, the National Recording Registry has introduced 24 other recordings. Among these also All I Want For Christmas Is You by Mariah CareyTake Me Home, Country Roads di John Denver and the spectacular Synchronicity of the Police.
