The International Olympic Committee announces the first esports Olympics

Good news for all lovers of eSports and video games. The International Olympic Committee has kicked off the Olympic Virtual Series, the first Olympics dedicated to esports

After years of discussions on the fact that video games can be considered, as well as a pastime, even real sports, today a huge step forward is being made on the issue following the news released by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The eSports will be officially part of the Olympic Games.

L‘IOC in fact, it kicked off the first Olympics dedicated to esports. In particular the Committee, in partner with five International Sports Federations (IFs) and several games publisher, will produce the first Olympic Virtual Series (OVS). The latter will take place from May 13, until the June 23 2021. In addition, they will precede the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. The OVS will mobilize a large number of sportsmen and fans, as well as reach new audiences. IOC President Thomas Bach said the Virtual Series will be a new and unique experience digital which aims to establish and grow a bond with new types of audiences in the field of virtual sports.

The launch of the OVS is consistent with the guidelines dictated by the 2020 + 5 Olympic Agenda, i.e. it encourages sports participation and promotes Olympic Values ​​with a special focus on Young people. Many people were particularly enthusiastic David Lappartient, President of the Esports and Gaming Liaison Group (ELG) and the International Cycling Union, who is enthusiastic about the cooperation between the various Institutions and Federations and the step forward made in favor of the Olympic Movement and eSports. Here are the names of the 5 Federations that will be part of the OVS.

  • World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) – eBaseball Powerful Pro Baseball 2020, Konami Digital Entertainment.
  • International Cycling Union (UCI) – Zwift, Zwift inc.
  • World Rowing – Open format.
  • World Sailing – Virtual Regatta, Virtual Regatta SAS.
  • International Federation of Automobiles (FIA) – Gran Turismo, Polyphony Digital.

Each of them will offer the fees events in digital format, thus maximizing participation and giving priority toinclusiveness. All events will differ in form and concept and will be available to participating athletes on their respective platforms provided by publishers. Fans, on the other hand, will be able to follow the events on Olympic Channels. We therefore await further details for the respective Olympic events dedicated to eSports.
