The debut of LUMIthe new supercomputer that aims to offer a very high calculation speed as well as a lot of environmental sustainability. The supercomputer is located in Kajaani, Finland, and was born from a project like EuroHPC and a consortium made up of ten countries (Finland, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Iceland, Norway, Poland, Sweden and Switzerland). Here are the full details:
LUMI is the new European supercomputer that guarantees a very high computing capacity, ideal for supporting scientific progress quickly. The supercomputer can be used for various tasks such as vaccine development, cancer diagnosis or mitigation of the effects of climate change.
L’artificial intelligence in fact, at the base of the project it has considerable potential and will be able to guarantee a large number of applications for LUMI. The supercomputer is also sustainable and uses natural cooling systems. Furthermore, residual heat represents about 20% of the urban heating of the city of Kajaani. In this way, the supercomputer is able to significantly reduce its carbon footprint.
Margrethe Vestager, Executive Vice President for a Europe Fit for the Digital Age, says: “Today marks an important step in Europe’s digital and green transformation: LUMI is now the fastest and most energy efficient supercomputer in Europe and one of the most powerful in the world ”
