The use of AI is risky in urban development

A study commissioned by European Parliament regarding Artificial Intelligence shows that the use ofAI in urban development it is potentially risky. Let’s find out all the details together.

Is AI in urban development risky?

A study commissioned by the European Parliament on theAI (Artificial Intelligence) and it urban development has highlighted the various issues related to the topic, highlighting how risky it can be. Among them there are security risks, for the private life but also prejudices related to the effect “black box”, created by algorithms. Furthermore, there is no lack of economic problems, such as job loss for employees due to automation.

Julie pellegrin e Louis Colnot, the two researchers who dealt with the study then presented to the regional development committee of the European Parliament, revealed:

These risks can compromise socio-economic and territorial cohesion to varying degrees. The use of artificial intelligence is a topic that, in general, has not yet been examined in depth.

The researchers later offered advice to MEPs. According to them, MEPs should address the issue of AI, carefully monitor the expenses related to these technologies, consolidate the knowledge base e encourage debate among citizens on advantages and disadvantages.

Regarding this Monika Zsigri, the Deputy Head of Unit of DG Regio of the European Commission, said:

Cohesion policy can do a lot with regard to the risks related to AI and digitization that can arise for Europe. There are ongoing negotiations between Member States and the Commission to ensure that artificial intelligence is always taken into account in programs. […] The Commission’s evaluation and reporting system needs to be more detailed.
