Twitter is preparing to introduce a new feature that will allow users to make audio and video calls from the platform. The announcement was made by the CEO Elon Muskwhich took control of the social network last October after buying it for $44 billion.
In a tweet, Musk wrote: “Soon you will be able to do voice and video chats from your account on this platform. You’ll be able to talk to people anywhere in the world without giving out your phone number.”
In his posts, Musk also launched a not too veiled dig at WhatsApp, the messaging app owned by Meta (formerly Facebook). The mogul called the app “untrusted” after a Twitter engineer discovered that WhatsApp makes unauthorized access to the microphone.

With this move, Elon Musk therefore aims to compete directly with the most popular messaging services such as Messenger, Signal, Telegram and WhatsApp. Musk also let it be known that, Starting today, DMs on Twitter will be encrypted to protect user privacy. It’s unclear whether calls will also benefit from the same protection.
Since becoming the head of Twitter, Musk has made several changes, sometimes sudden and controversial, such as the removal and then the paid reinstatement of blue checks for profile verification.
