If the 2017 change had appeared revolutionary, when Twitter had gone from a limit of 140 characters to the current 260, Elon Musk’s announcement today is even more so: the maximum limit for tweets will be extended to 10,000 characters.
The CEO’s announcement came following a request made by a @ThePrimeagen user. This, a programmer, asked Musk if Twitter was going to implement a feature for inserting codes in tweets. The billionaire replied that there is no block function, but that the tweet limit will soon be extended up to 10,000 characters.
It remains to be seen if the new limit will be available to everyone or if it will instead be a prerogative of Twitter Blue, the Premium plan of the platform.
In addition to the extended limit for tweets, Musk also announced (via TechCrunch) changes regarding private messages (DMs). These will benefit from crittografia end-to-end, which means that no one, including Twitter moderation, will be able to read the chats (except the recipients of the messages). Several other messaging apps and protocols like WhatsApp, Signal, and iMessage already use this type of encryption.
Currently the Twitter moderation team (or what’s left of it) can potentially read the content of DMs on the platform. Again, it’s unclear whether encryption will be implemented for all users or just Twitter Blue subscribers, as it’s unclear whether it will extend to group chats as well.
