What If…? Episode 3: a convincing crime

What If…? has come to the third episode on Disney Plus in a hypothetical scenario in which we begin to see the choral participation of the other Avengers as well. Here is our review of What If…? Episode 3

ORIGINAL TITLE: What If… ?. GENDER: Superheroes. COUNTRY: United States. DIRECTOR: AC Bradley. DURATION: 9 episodes, 34 mins approx. DISTRIBUTOR: Disney +. RELEASE: 25 August 2021.

Let’s start our What If…? which continues this week on Disney Plus with its third episode that has a choral imprint and puts the different Avengers on the scene, even if only if not in the way we are used to seeing them. Obviously this is a hypothetical world, which takes us back to 2008 where Natasha and Fury go to Tony Stark to give him some lithium, but suddenly he dies. From here, then the fate of the characters changes as we have seen it and a series of events hits all the Avengers killing them in a mysterious way.

A very dark and mysterious episode that contrasts greatly with the previous one in which we saw T’Challa in the role of Star Lord in the midst of a direction of bright colors, humor and a lot of rhythm.

Mystery and crime among the Avengers | What If…? Episode 3

Overall an episode that works quite well, with a very interesting atmosphere compared to the previous ones and which also opens up the possibility that the authors will continue to vary style of direction, presenting us each time with different anthologies not only in the type of plot. From the beginning a structure of this type, keeps you glued to the screen for the short duration of the episode, because we have mystery and crime. We want to understand who is behind all the sudden murders and especially if it has to do with the Marvel universe as we know it.

In a very Game of Thrones formula, it’s clear that we can’t get attached to the characters as they keep coming in, because they’ll be out soon. Along with this narrative structure, the direction gives a good dark accompaniment, alternating with moments of humor thanks to the presence of SHIELD agent Coulson

How the episode is structured | What If…? Episode 3

The episode’s structure certainly has one of the defects that we have already seen in the previous ones, that is a hasty pace: there is so much content to tell in a short period of time and therefore the events are too close to each other. One gets the impression that we will see this trend also in the next episodes and that it could almost become a characteristic element of this mini series.

The second flaw is the ending, which as in the other episodes seems to be sketchy, abruptly closing what happened. And above all it also makes us reflect on the concept of the series. Until now, the first episode starring Peggy Carter has been the most faithful to the concept: a small change that borrows an entire narrative arc. Here, we see many changes and we see almost an excuse to tell a different story, or a world without the Avengers.

Conclusion

Our What If…? episode 3 evaluates a good episode overall, which mixes narrative creativity with the presence of many Avengers in other guises and situations. It brings with it several flaws that seem to be the trademark of this series, but still holds a good level with the other two episodes seen so far.

A crime that works overall

Points in favor

  • Good thriller / crime idea
  • Good way to insert all the Avengers characters

Points against

  • Hasty finish
  • Departure from the concept
