Al CES 2022 the Wi-Fi Alliance announced the new standard Wi-Fi 6 Release 2. It promises faster uploads even in high data traffic environments, when multiple people are uploading data to the network simultaneously. An important result especially for improving video conferencing and smart working.

The new Wi-Fi 6 marked an important step forward in terms of performance compared to the previous generation. Especially in environments with a lot of traffic and ‘noise’, such as apartment buildings for homes and offices while working. Wi-Fi 6E took it a step further by using the least busy frequency at 6GHz, where you can prioritize the most important device in the house (for example the laptop for smart working).

The new Wi-Fi 6 Release 2 also takes advantage of support l’uplink multi-user MIMO. This technology allows multiple connected devices to simultaneously send data to a Wi-Fi access point. This should improve the stability and speed of the upload.

In offices, more people will then be able to carry out for example one video call with laptop or smartphone. But the improvement will also serve those who have many smart home devices connected in the house. This is because the new standard takes advantage of the ability to activate low-power mode or sleep mode, and then wake up when needed, instead of continuously emitting signals. This should help for autonomy.

The features of the Wi-Fi 6 Release apply to all supported bands: 2.4Ghz, 5GHz and 6GHz. All three in fact have their use, with the line from 2.4GHz still indispensable for older devices or affordable smart home items.

The only downside to this new standard, according to many observers, is the name. Wi-Fi 6 Release 2 should improve both the capabilities of Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 6E, but all three coexist. It will become complex again to understand which router to choose and which devices support the new standards, without being able to quickly check online.
