Windows 11: bug when searching for Outlook

Deja-vu for some Outlook users, as search doesn’t work properly. Windows 11 bug stops Outlook searches (again)

Users of Windows 11 (here for more information) in some cases they found themselves suffering from a bug which interferes with Outlook search results. As noted by Bleeping Computer, the e-mail client may not return recent message results when performing a search in Outlook on a Windows 11 PC. The problem can occur with offline POP, IMAP, and Exchange accounts, scenarios where Outlook uses the Windows locale to index email messages (in most cases).

Exchange online and Microsoft 365 accounts are not affected as they use the service search for most searches and this is not affected by the gremlin in question.

Windows 11 bug details on Outlook

Microsoft (here for more information on the company) explains that it is investigating the problem and is

currently working on a solution

with an update on any fixes to be provided in the support document reporting the problem. In the meantime, we will try to offer a temporary solution for all concerned users who are frustrated with shaky search results in Outlook.

Bugs are predictable, even if they are not welcome. Too widespread since the arrival of Windows 10, but the situation with this is a bit more embarrassing for Microsoft as the same kind of Outlook bug occurred last year (before being fixed in January 2022). So, it’s not at all good for Microsoft that the glitch has resurfaced. It is also not exceptional that the workaround provided involves the registry, an area of the system that requires a good deal of attention when fumbling and making changes. In fact, small mistakes made in the registry can cause havoc.

Temporary solution

If you want to apply the workaround, please be very careful following the steps outlined by Microsoft for troubleshooting. But also keep in mind that the false solution implies the disabling Windows Desktop Search, essentially forcing Outlook to use its own search. This was exactly the same workaround that Microsoft aired when this problem first raised its head last year, as you may recall. Hopefully, given the previous troubleshooting experience of this bug, a remedy should be available shortly, although there is always the possibility that this is a seemingly more thorny flaw in Outlook than previously thought given the its recurrence. We’ll see, but it’s worth keeping an eye on that support page where a notification will come about any fixes that have been implemented.
