Windows 11 Notepad: Slower than the original Win32 app

The new Windows 11 Notepad is apparently slower than the original Win32 app, let’s find out together in this article

Microsoftmade the new one available Block notes for all Windows 11 users. Updated a few weeks ago after testing it with a limited group of users. The new Notepad corresponds to the renewed appearance of the operating system. Similar to Paint and others app di Officehas been updated with a restyling Fluent Designwhich leads rounded corners in many areas.

Notepad also includes the compatibility with dark mode and looks good on Windows 11. It also features a new font for buttons, menus and more. It is the most significant update to Notepad for years, as the general interface of the app has remained unchanged for several years.

The new Notepad

Block notes has always been an app of quick and easy text editing for windowsbut apparently it is slower than usual on Windows 11. There are several post from Feedback Hub which highlight app performance issues, including a bug where vertical scrolling doesn’t seem smooth.

Here is a statement from one user who was able to test it first:

The vertical scrolling animation in Notepad 11 is incorrect and inconsistent with other Windows apps (Explorer doesn’t animate at all and only scrolls based on the amount of lines configured, Settings and Edge scroll at a fast speed). Notepad on Windows 11 11 scrolls according to the amount of lines configured, but it does so very slowly. It shouldn’t animate at all or animate faster.

There’s a other problem where Notepad it will not process the texts quickly when you paste up to 500.00 lines from apps like Microsoft Excel.

Another user noted:

Notepad loading time is infinitely slow and actually never ends. Pasting copied text from Notepad itself is also very slow. It was pretty fast in the Win32 version.

Microsoft has recognized the performance issues and they will be addressed in the next update

Luckily, Microsoft acknowledged that Block notes presents performance issues and which will be fixed in next update which is being tested. According to Microsoft officials, the Notepad update will bring further performance improvements when scrolling through very large files or replacing a large amount of text.

For example, if you are copying texts from a document Word and you paste it into Notepad and try to swipe, Notepad it won’t work any slower. Microsoft is also improving theaccessibility for thescreen readeril text resizing and more. The update now makes use of assistive technologies already available in the operating system.

Microsoft has also updated Notepad with support ARM64 nativeso the performance is now obviously better on ARM64 devices in the 11.2204. You will see faster and better performance when the update for Notepad is available.
