YouTube has closed the test of picture-in-picture for users Premium who use a iPhone, without having officially announced the launch of the feature. But a unclear tweet has made iOS users believe the arrival of the feature in the final (and free) version. Unfortunately, however, it was only a misunderstanding.
To begin from 8 April, users of YouTube Premium who use iPhone can no longer use the picture-in-picture function. In fact, it no longer appears among the experimental features of the app and some users report the error message “the feature you are trying has been disabled”. However, it appears that the functionality is ccontinuing to work for those who activated the function before April 8th.
YouTube probably wants to evaluate customer feedback before finally enabling the feature, as it does Android users subscribed to YouTube Premium. But one tweet created a mix-up that disappointed many iPhone users.
Indeed YouTube had tweeted: “Are you using an iOS smartphone? Ifthe Picture-in-Picture function is coming and will be available in a few days for all devices with iOS 15+ “.
But after several newspapers and users on social networks had reported the arrival of the function, without even the need to activate a Premium account, the clarification comes with another tweet. “Just to clarify: what we are implementing is the picture-in-picture for iOS 15+ devices of YouTube TV. If you are thinking about the function per l’app YouTube, is only available for Premium users on smartphones Android“.
The test immediately should have been only temporary, from last June until 31 October. The extension brought picture-in-picture through April. The feature is expected to arrive on iOS “in the next months” according to YouTube spokespersons. But for the moment no date. We will keep you informed.
