What is HDMI 2.1?

To take full advantage of the 4K @ 120Hz that the PS5 is capable of delivering, your TV must have one HDMI 2.1 port, which is currently only present in a few TV models, being a recently released technology.

The main innovations introduced by HDMI 2.1 I’m:

  • 8K@120Hz
  • Variable Refresh Rate (VRR), which stands for Variable Refresh Rate: changes the frequency in Hz of the TV synchronizing it with the FPS provided by the video card of the console. This is to prevent the so-called tearing, an artifact that is created when a single frame displayed on the screen contains information from two or more frames
  • Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM), acronym for Auto Low Latency Mode: Guarantees zero lag between controller input and on-screen action by automatically enabling Game mode when it detects a game in progress
  • HDR Dinamico: dynamic metadata makes the TV adjust the brightness according to the scene being viewed, changing it frame by frame. Up to HDMI 2.0, we only had static metadata for standard HDR on HDMI, which set a standard brightness level for all scenes.

Once you have chosen your new TV you will need to equip yourself with cables compatible with the new standard, able to transfer at least 40Gbps, how’s that included in the PlayStation 5 box.

Can I use the PlayStation 5 on my HDMI 2.0 TV?

The PS5 it can be safely used in conjunction with any TV with HDMI inputs. Connect the console to a port HDMI 2.0 or 1.4 will still allow you to play smoothly in 4K @ 60Hz with active HDR.

Currently, only a few titles support 120Hz, including:

  • Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War
  • Dirt 5
  • Devil May Cry 5: Special Edition
  • Rainbow Six Siege
  • Gears 5
  • Ori and the Will of the Wisps

This list is sure to grow over time, but as you can see, for now the most titles don’t need a 120Hz TV.

Recommended features for choosing your TV

So what do you need to watch out for when choosing your new PS5 TV? Check that it supports:

  • Game Mode
  • Auto Low-Latency Mode (ALLM)
  • Variable Refresh Rate (VRR)

Sony is advertising some of its TVs as’Ready for PlayStation 5‘. These TVs have to meet some requirements like a response time of less than 7.2 milliseconds and the supporto al 4K@120Hz.

We do not know if this recognition will later be extended to TVs from other manufacturers.
