And finally it was also The Legend of Zelda’s turn: the game of the year 2017, Breath of the Wild, is the star of our micro-review today
If already the fifth place dedicated yesterday to Super Mario Odyssey can surprise, put in fourth place (chronologically fourth last) of Advent Calendar the review of a masterpiece of the caliber of The Legend of Zelda Breath of The Wild it will definitely go wrong with someone. What blasphemy, right? Not for the writer: simply, there is still better on the podium. Like Twilight Princess did in the changing of the guard between GameCube and (mirrored) on Wii, now the passing of the torch sees Wii U’s feeble torch rekindle like phoenix fire on Nintendo Switch. A role that the first Zelda open world more than earned.
Naturally Eiji Aonuma, director of the series, was quick to specify that “in a sense, even the first The Legend of Zelda was open world.” And who are we to correct it? The reinterpretation key has changed some of the canons of the Zeldian universe to adapt them to a different game design after all, but the final result has emerged relatively unscathed from this transition process. Reinventing previously immutable cornerstones in a series as dogmatic as a Big N franchise is no small feat; least of all, then, if we count this as the debut of the Kyoto Colossus in the modern era of Triple A productions.
The first The Legend of Zelda, therefore, brought non-linearity where Super Mario Bros. had established criteria, before Metroid did the same with platformers. Years later, Breath of the Wild represents the rebirth of the same subversive verve in contemporary Nintendo. We are focusing on only one aspect, true: there are still barriers between this game and absolute perfection (destructible weapons in primis), but with such a phenomenal world-building there aren’t many salaams left to dwell on. “If you see it, you can reach it”: it is possible to conclude the tutorial in the Altopiano delle Origini and go and pick a fight with the boss finale. Perhaps this is where Pokémon Scarlet and Violet should have taken note.
