Spotify will suggest playlists for you to listen based on data from HealthKit

Spotify users know it well: the app constantly recommends music and playlists to listeners that may be of interest to them. However, the Swedish giant is about to take a new step in this direction, integrating some exclusive features of iOS. Particularly Spotify is working to support and exchange data with HealthKitApple’s application for tracking your workouts and health.

The basic idea is that, in this way, Spotify will be able to recommend playlists based on the type of training planned or on the state of health.

The news comes from the insight Chris Messina on Twitter (via 9to5mac). Messina found a code in the Spotify app that appears to refer to support with HealthKit. This would allow Spotify to access specific information, such as the time the user spent on daily exercises, calories burned and more.

According to Messina, the platform wants to use this information to suggest specific songs and personalized playlists based on the training done and the pace of the exercise.

We remember that the user will obviously have to accept the sharing of data, as is the case with any third-party app that uses the HealthKit API. However, it is still unclear how Spotify will handle all the collected data.

Messina also notes that the latest update to the Spotify iOS app features a new page for managing subscriptions. This prevents users from changing their plan directly from the appwith an ironic message that has the flavor of a jab at Apple: “we know it’s not ideal”, reads the Spotify app.

The dig is obviously the ongoing tug-of-war between the streaming music giant and the AppStore policies, which limit payment options by withholding around 30% commissions. Spotify would instead like to process transactions on third-party sites, without paying the steep commissions to Apple.
