Earlier this year, Dropbox announced a new beta version of its app macOS with native platform support Apple Silicon. Now the long-awaited update with optimizations for the M1 chip is finally available for all Mac users – let’s take a look at everything we know about this major new update.
As previously reported, it took Dropbox more than a year to confirm that it was working on a version of its app that is compatible with the M1 chip. Even with so many times dilated, however, the first beta version fully compatible with i Mac Apple Silicon it wasn’t released until January 2022, three months after Dropbox’s confirmation.
Version 143.4.4161 of the Dropbox for macOS includes support for the Apple Silicon platform, which is the basis of the M1, M1 Pro and M1 Max chips. According to the company, users will receive the update automatically, so there is no need to reinstall the app. Here is the company’s statement:
“Dropbox natively supports Apple silicon (M1) Mac computers, taking advantage of its improved performance and efficiency to work best on Mac devices. All users with Apple silicone devices will automatically receive the native version of Dropbox.”
Apps that run natively on Apple Silicon can take full advantage of the M1 chip and its variants. For MacBook users, this means that the software will use less power, resulting in longer battery life. Earlier this week, Microsoft has also updated OneDrive with Apple Silicon support.
