Apple has begun work on its next-generation smartphones, the iPhone 14 lineup, and according to rumors, the Cupertino-based tech giant will launch four models in September 2022. A new report from The Elec, presumably from some sources in the display supply chain, showed that Apple has not yet decided on the type of display it wants to implement on the iPhone 14 Max. The Cupertino company is reportedly undecided between the display LTPS a 60Hz and the panel LTPO a 120Hz.

If the company chooses the 120 Hz LTPO display, it will have to purchase panels from Samsung, which has a near monopoly on OLED LTPO technology. The South Korean giant already supplies the panels for the iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max models, so it shouldn’t be a problem to establish a new supply in this regard.

However, it is clear that Apple is looking to diversify its supply chain and reduce its reliance on Samsung, which is why the company is also looking with interest at manufacturers such as LG and BOE. Following this theory, the iPhone 14 Max could mount a panel LTPS a 60Hz.

The reason is obvious: LG is unable to produce OLED displays with LTPO technology and should work on this aspect of production only during the next year. Similarly, BOE has already confirmed that such technology will not be available until at least 2023.

Going back to the iPhone 14, the standard version should have a 6.1-inch screen with a 60Hz refresh rate, while the Max model should have a 6.7-inch screen.
