Judas: BioShock Creator Defines Gameplay

The spiritual successor to BioShock, Judas, can be defined in gameplay as “a procedurally generated roguelite”: words by Ken Levine

When describing the gameplay than expected Judasspiritual successor of BioShockthe same author Ken Levine he used very specific terms. However, it is a first-person shooter with a narrative feel, but the title has been in development for ten years at the studio Ghost Story Games focuses on what Levine calls “narrative LEGOs.” In other words, therefore, procedural generation based on “blocks” of dialogue or plot for an experience capable of genuinely reacting to the player's choices. Or better, quoting Levine himself, “pseudo-procedural, because it's not like Minecraft, where everything comes from a couple of mathematical functions. We build elements from which the game will make good levels, basically, as well as a good responsive plot.”

Judas gameplay: more than “BioShock in space”?

What emerges from the BioShock DNA from which Judas is born is a gameplay shaped by interactions with the three main NPCs. The ship's former captains (Tom, Nefertiti and Hope) appear in the game as holograms hostile to each other with which relate, for better or for worse. The relationship will change and with it too possible interactions. “These scenes can happen anywhere and there is no shortage of interactions,” explains Levine. “The dialogue can happen in every location where they appear… and not in the cutscenes, but at any moment of the adventure.” The roguelite vein occurs in the death as part of the experience, starting from the beginning: health is purposely low, and rarely accessible with enemies around. There cryptic conclusion by Levine is this: “You can change with each rebirth: improve yourselves, change the tools – which are versatile – and you will change Mayflower itself.”
